Lintel Failure

What is Lintel Failure?

Lintels can be a consequence of a construction defect, for example:

  • the lintel may have been incorrectly fitted with insufficient overhang over one side of the opening; or
  • the lintel may not be rated to the required loading.

Lintel failure may also be the result of replacing wooden-framed windows (where the lintel was built into the window), with PVC windows, which are unable to take the loads of the masonry above.

Finally, lintel failure may be the result of the building's natural aging and deterioration process.
